So I listened — and several bars in, an intern popped into my office to announce that she loved the song and, not to brag or anything, she had been an early adopter: viewer No. 225,000. Once I got over the embarrassment of being viewer No. 3,000,000, I realized something: the song was really good. Just as good as it had been 2,999,999 viewers ago.

Alexandra Molotkow on Azealia Banks’ “212” music video in “Why the Old-School Music Snob Is the Least Cool Kid on Twitter”. I met Alexandra last spring while working on the Ryerson Review of Journalism and I think she’s one of the best writers in Toronto under 30. She makes plenty of good points in this New York Times Magazine piece about music snobbery and why we should give it a rest already. Or as my friend Dave put it on Facebook: “Why don’t we all start listening to music with a complete lack of regard of how popular it is, what radiostations and magazines and blogs cover it and how many times we (or the world) have heard it?” I know I’m guilty of music snobbery from time to time but I’m working on it. For example, I downloaded the new Nicki Minaj album a few days ago and I happen to think some of the songs are pretty damn good. (via maxmertens)

Azealia Banks - Licquorice

Azealia is going to blow up. Her other track you should look up is called “212.” Just do yourself a favor and become obsessed with her, it’ll save you time when she blows up big like 3-4 months from now. And you’ll be able to say you already knew about her and be that music hipster. And that’s what we all want, AMIRITE?
